Services Provided by ELL Program

Identifying and testing of K-12 students who speak a language other than English at home, within 10 days of Registration, using the Washington Language Proficiency Placement Test at any RSD site.
Administering the annual Washington Language Proficiency Test Series, WLPTS-II, to all ESL students throughout the district, each spring, until they transition out of the Program into mainstream classes.
Tracking the English proficiency and academic progress of all ELL students who are and were eligible for ELL.
Using a student observation/teacher consultation model in the classrooms, provides ELL students regular classroom time with the ELL Specialist and ELL TA. (One-to-one ELL instruction is available based on classroom teacher or SIT team recommendations for a limited period of time to meet the needs of targeted instructional areas.)
Teaching with the Natural Approach (Stephen Krashen), stressing meaningful communication, so that children hear and understand messages in English.
Communicating with parents through phone calls, letters, conferencing, and Progress Reports.
An Elementary PLC (Professional Learning Community), and a secondary PLC meet throughout the school year to serve ELL's in their acquisition of English. The PLC's are helping to guide best practices for students acquiring English.
A Summer School session for Beginning ELL's prepares fall kindergartners for elementary school.
