Carnation's Art Docent Program

Carnation Elementary School's Art Docent Program is growing strong! The program began in the Riverview School District many years ago. With the support from parent volunteers, the PTA, and Riverview School District our school has achieved a high standard of art lessons. Guided by the EALRs (Essential Academic Learning Requirements) the program reaches students from kindergarten to fifth grade. The program includes a variety of different artists, from different cultures, and time periods. This helps to expand the students awareness of art appreciation, and a variety of artistic mediums. Mediums include: pencil, charcoal, watercolor, clay, tempera paint, oil, pastels, chalk and a variety of paper types. The program is conducted with a series of questions and discussions related directly to the piece of art brought into the classroom. There is never a right or wrong answer, only contributions to the conversation.

Program Goals

  • To expand children's ability to form definitions of their visual world.
  • To familiarize elementary school children with artists in history.
  • To examine elements of art that the children can apply to their own creative endeavors.
  • To acquaint the children with varied media as a means of expression.
  • To use volunteer docents from the community as facilitators.
  • To provide a resource for teachers.
  • To emphasize that lessons are a springboard for creative exploration rather than being limited to information gathering.
  • To establish the legitimacy of art as a critical part of the basic curriculum.

FAQ's Art Docent Program

Questions
1)  What is an Art Docent?
2)  How do I become an Art Docent?
3)  How much time is involved?
4)  Do I need any art background?
5)  How often do I go into the classroom?

Answers
1)  Q What is an Art Docent?
A
The art docent program is a student art curriculum taught in cooperation with staff and parent volunteers (art docents). The art docents teach students about a particular artist and guide the students in creating a work of art in that style.
2)  Q How do I become an Art Docent?
A
  1. Attend the fall docent meeting at Carnation Elementary School or contact our Arts Coordinator, Carol Gould @ 844-4575. You will be given an Art Docent Handbook.
  2. Contact your child's teacher and discuss a  mutually agreeable time during the month (ie. second Tuesday of each month at 10:30). The in-class time is usually an hour.
  3. Prints are located in the PARADE Art Room. Please use checkout sheet with your name, phone number and location of print.
  4. Each month pick a project based on grade level, research information is in the book and on the back of the print. You may also get additional information about artists, project ideas and additional examples of artists' works from many sources, such as the Seattle Art Museum, local libraries, and the internet.
  5. Prepare the information for your presentation. It is helpful if you have a finished sample of the art project. Creating the project yourself enables you to teach the lesson with more efficiency, however, there are many existing project samples available from your fellow docents.
  6. On the day of your presentation, plan to arrive in plenty of time to pick up the print in the library, and get needed supplies from the art room or classroom teacher. The teachers and students count on you to be on time.
  7. Leave the print in the classroom until you come back for the next art project. Then return it to the art library.
  8. Student artwork can be displayed in the classroom, classroom hallway and following a two-week period for existing displays, in the hallways in and around the building. Mounting and/or displaying work is the best way to give students and their docent a real sense of accomplishment!
3)  Q How much time is involved?
A
  • Approximately 2 hours to 2  1/2 hours per project, per month.
  • One hour is in class time.
  • Pre class preparation time 30 min. to one hour depending upon the project. If making a sample at home an additional thirty minutes.
  • Thirty minutes for clean up and returning extra supplies to the office workroom.
  • Thirty minutes for hanging up artwork in classroom or hallway.
4)  Q Do I need any art background?
A
No. The Riverview School District Art Docent Handbook and Arts Coordinator has all the information needed to feel confident leading an art class. You may also observe other docent classes and consult the library and internet for unlimited ideas.
5)  Q How often do I go into the classroom?
A
One day per month is the district recommendation, however it is up to both the docent and the teacher to decide whether to create more extensive projects and/or increase lesson time.
