WHAT WILL BE REMODELED @ CARNATION ELEMENTARY?

Pretty much, every part of the school will have some type of upgrade, remodel, or improvement.  Here are some of the highlights:

  • 1989 (Red) 2-Story Wing: New carpet, paint, and HVAC (air conditioning/heat) Systems throughout the 2-story building.  New "teaching walls" installed in all classrooms - this is a 16' shelving unit with new white boards, book shelves, and storage.  In the future we hope to have a new Activboard installed in every classroom (pending the future Tech Levy).  In addition, every classroom will be equipped with a ceiling mounted projector and technology teaching station with a new laptop (paid from the last Tech Levy).  The school office will also receive some minor upgrades and improvements as well.  The Pre-School play area will be enclosed for improved safety.
  •  1980's (Blue) Library Wing: This wing will have the majority of the work done on it and will likely have the largest impact since it has never been remodeled.  Upgrades will include: New HVAC (air conditioning/heat) Systems; new energy efficient and expanded windows in every classroom and the school library; new carpet & paint throughout; new walls and expanded doors in every classroom; new shelving/casing in every classroom, including student cubbies and coat-hooks and extra storage; New "teaching walls" installed in all classrooms - this is a 16' shelving unit with new white boards, book shelves, and storage.  In the future we hope to have a  new Activboard installed in every classroom (pending the future Tech Levy).  In addition, every classroom will be equipped with a ceiling mounted projector and technology teaching station with a new laptop (paid from the last Tech Levy); new electrical upgrades to better handle modern technology needs; a completely remodeled school library; new office space for specialist teachers/staff who travel from building to building; new student and staff bathrooms; and improvements to the school gym.
  • PLEASE NOTE: All 4th & 5th grade students in this wing (Minaglia, Isler, Panekso) as well as Mr. Owen's 5th Grade Class will be relocated to portable classrooms in late spring and most likely through next Fall 2010 during this remodel phase.  Ms. Turchin's 2/3 Class will be relocated to the Millin. Wing (Mr. Owen's old Room 125).  We anticipate the new portables to arrive behind the school this winter (Feb.-March) to prepare for the move.  Portable toilets will be in place near the portables and the interior bathrooms will remain open for student use during school days as well.
  • 2000 (Gold) Millennium Wing: This wing will receive minor improvements since it was recently updated/remodeled in 1999-2000.  Replacement of old casework/shelves and installation of new cabinets including student cubbies and coat hooks.  Also, new "teaching walls" installed in all classrooms - this is a 16' shelving unit with new white boards, book shelves, and storage.  In the future we hope to have a new Activboard installed in every classroom (pending the future Tech Levy).  In addition, every classroom will be equipped with a ceiling mounted projector and technology teaching station with a new laptop (paid from the last Tech Levy).
  • Multi-Purpose Room/Other: In addition, the school's kitchen will have major upgrades internally with new equipment and a cashier's booth for student lunch check-out.  We will also have additional custodial storage upgrades made throughout the school.  The play areas and grounds may also receive some upgrades (pending funding).  In addition, the school will be re-roofed and

WHAT IS THE PROJECTED TIMELINE FOR THIS REMODEL?

  • The architect for the district has been working on plan development and working with school and district staff over the past year doing educational specs., and developing plans for the upcoming remodel.  Information meetings with staff and the school leadership team have been going on since the fall of 2008.  Teachers and staff and the Site-Based Council have had input along the way.
  • Winter-Spring 2010 - Removal and replacement of old portables (behind the school).
  • Spring 2010 - Preparation for new portable classrooms/bathrooms.  Creation of construction staging area (located between the gym and the play area - to be fenced off for student/staff safety).
  • April 2010 - During Spring Break (April 5-9) the district plans to move the identified 4-5th classrooms in the 1980's Wing to the new portables.
  • May 2010 - Construction crew will take possession of the majority of the 1980's Wing and begin construction.  The school library, student/staff restrooms, music room and gym will remain open until school is out.
  • Summer 2010- Fall 2010 - Full construction begins/continues.  *RSD Summer School will be moved to Stillwater this summer due to construction at CE & CV.

HOW IS THIS PROJECT PAID FOR?  WHERE DOES THE DISTRICT GET FUNDING FOR THIS IN THIS ECONOMY?

  • The local voters approved a School Improvements Bond Election in February of 2008.  This bond was to make facility improvements at all schools in the RSD and to build a new Riverview Learning Center (east of the district offices) to house the ever growing PARADE Homeschool Program as well as the Middle and High School Alternative Programs.  Your tax dollars, hard at work!
