Math with Mrs. Schutte

Grades 2 and 3

October 6, 2009

Dear  Families,

 · We began our day with the number 6.  We have been making math fact sentences with the date.  Our challenge today was to create a number sentence that started higher than 6 and took multiple steps to get to the target number.

· For instance:  40—30—4 = 6

· Today, we began our work with some fictional characters called “yekktis”.  Each one has a different set of attributes (eyes, antennas, etc.) for us to put into groups. A concept to be grasped is that sometimes things have more than one attribute, and deciding how to group them is based on what you are trying to find out.

· We began some math fact practice today.  Your child is bringing home a folder to practice with—please send it back and forth on Tuesdays for math.  As I mentioned last week, quick recall of basic facts is important, but it is only one part of your child’s math learning.

· For home practice, please just begin a routine of math fact practice—try for four different days, along with the math you are doing each day at home.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Schutte
