Helpful Reading Test-Taking Tips

Multiple choice questions, short answer and extended response questions make up the reading portion of the WASL test.

Students need to remember:

1. To eliminate the wrong answers. This increases your odds of choosing the right answer.

2. To carefully read instructions. Teachers are not allowed to answer questions or clarify.

3. There will always be questions on the following:
the theme or message of the reading
unfamiliar vocabulary
story elements (setting, plot, characterization, et al.)
the author's purpose
the main idea of the reading

4. You will always be asked to:
summarize the reading - make sure you know what "summarize" means
compare/contrast two types of readings - make sure you know what "compare/contrast" means
think beyond literal dimensions (read between the lines) - make sure you know what "inference" means
