Class Length: Yearlong
Purpose: To provide an integrated approach to reading and writing
instruction based on thematic units, students interests, and students academic
skills and abilities
Description of learning activities: Students will participate in literature groups, quarterly writing
projects around the themes using the writing process and a variety of genres,
editing skills, journal writing, and develop independence in learning how to be
responsible for homework and classroom assignments.
Follow-up or at-home activities: Weekly
assignments vary but include on a regular basis: 120 minutes of outside
reading, a literature letter to the teacher, research and rough drafts of
writing projects, literature circle jobs, discussions questions about trade
books, and other work not completed in the classroom.
