Title of class:  World Cultures and Literature

Grade group(s):  high school students - grades 9 - 12

Day: Thursday  Block:  1 & 2  (8:30 - 12:00)

 

Class Length: Yearlong                                 

 

Core Class    High School Credit _____ __ .5 credits per semester for each English and Social Studies

 

Purpose: This class will explore the history, culture, art, and literature of one area of the world each quarter. These areas include the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. We will read a variety of literature from each area in an attempt to understand other ways of living and thinking.

     

Description of learning activities: Because this is both English and history, we will look at cultures through their literature and art.  We will read a wide variety of books and use them as a basis for practicing communication skills in areas of writing, presentation, computer technology, and video.  Student will work independently and in small groups on a various projects that encourage them to explore areas of interest deeply. Field trips will be to local areas of the culture currently being studied.

 

Follow-up or at-home activities Students will be expected to do about 4-5 hours of homework per week for English and the same amount for history. Most of this will be reading, writing, and research.
