Lego Groups - 11/24

Date What we did in class Assignment
9/8/09 In class today, we talked about how our class would work this year, forming engineering groups, keeping journals.  We attempted to define the characteristics of a robot, and explored some of the sensors of the NXT.

Homework:  What is a Robot?  List at least 5 examples of robots found in your daily life and briefly describe their Inputs and Outputs.

For example:

Television:  Inputs - Buttons, remote control, signals;

 Outputs: screen images, sound

9/15/09 In class, we played around with writing simple programs to the NXT.  Students wrote programs on the NXT as well as on the computer for download.  Work groups were assigned. Homework:  Think of a task, like making a sandwich.  Write down all the steps that it would take to accomplish the task well.
9/22/09

Students wrote 5 simple programs and practiced downloading and running the programs to the NXT.  None
9/29/09 Students built a simple robot from instructions for the purpose of having something to practice programming on.  After building was complete, students wrote programs to carry out simple instructions as directed.
10/6/09 and 10/13/09 Students are working on meeting certain programming challenges with their robots, such as learning to respond to being touched, responding to getting too close to something, learning to "see" a black line.
11/16/09 This week, many students are working on creating a robot that can get itself out of a chasm by bumping into the sides and backing up until it finds it's way out.  We received some new lego kits this week and so work groups have been modified to make a few of them smaller.
