Assignment |
| 9/8/09 |
Today in class we will take some time to look at how our class will work
this year, including how to access the website for information, how to
use an agenda, a getting to know you activity. The concept of
probability was also introduced with an activity involving drawing tiles
from a bag. Terms discussed include: probability, chance, outcome,
event, outcome, complementary event |
HW: Lesson 9-1, p. 135, in Probability packet. |
| 9-15-09 |
We did an experiment to try to
predict the contents of a bag based on data from choosing tiles
out of the bag. We talked about experimental vs.
theoretical probability, and also simple events vs. compound
events. Students also were introduced to the math facts
practice program that we will use this year. |
Do Mad Minute Quiz F11 at home - see
how long it takes you. HW: Lesson 9-1, Practice WS, p. 136 |
| 9/22/09 |
Today we will explore trying to find
the outcomes of a complex situation by modeling with a tree
diagram. Students will play a game involving Skittles, die roll
and the use of strategy. |
Do Mad Minute Quiz F12 at home and
record how many problems you can do in a minute. WS:
"Why did the king's birthday celebration last so long?" |
| 9/29/09 |
Students will play the game of
Pig and explore the probabilities associated with it.
Students will discuss the possible outcomes of the game, and the
benefits to using a strategy in playing it. |
WS: When the Boy Tire Maker
Married . . . |
| 10/6/09 |
Students began class with a
toothpick challenge - ask them to show you at home! We
then discussed the concept of sample space, outcomes, and how to
use a tree diagram to figure out all the possible outcomes in a
situation. |
Start thinking about the probability
game we will work on next week. |
| 10/13/09 |
We started
class with a brain teaser problem regarding some kids and a
picnic lunch (your student may have brought this home to
share
J).
To continue exploring probability and the idea of a fair
game, students played a multiplication dice game with a
partner and determined if the game rules were fair. This
assignment is being continued for homework. Students were
also given their final project of the probability unit –
creating a game based on probability and skill.
Next week,
your student will be taking a math skills assessment while
in math class. It is a computer based test that adapts to a
student’s abilities and can help teachers and parents know
what students are ready to learn. Detailed information
regarding the results of this assessment will be shared with
students and parents when the test results become
available.

Today, in class, students:
-
learned about integers, and practiced using a number
line to add them
-
worked on a problem solving challenge involving waiting
in lines.
-
talked about the assumptions that mathematicians might
make in modeling real world situations
